Tummy of Brussels

This is the most international street in a city with a strongly cosmopolitan air because it attracts the largest number of visitors. It is one of the pedestrian precincts in the “Ilot Sacré” and it draws tourists both for its unique atmosphere and because of the never-ending bustle (especially in the evening). Its name dates back to the days when there was still a butcher’s shop there; now the street has a plethora of restaurants with tables spilling out onto the narrow pavement. Many of the houses have crow-stepped gables and there is a row of superbly decorated doors dating from the 17th. Rue des Bouchers is worth visiting for its warm, friendly atmosphere alone, but the street also bears many testimonies of the past, also worthy of note.

Recommendation for a great meal in the Rue des Bouchers:

CHEZ LEON: Think of it as the mussels from Brussels, as this big, basic restaurant is the city's most famous purveyor of that marine delicacy. Léon has been flexing its mussels since 1893. And at Chez Léon, children under the age of 12, accompanied by a relative, can eat free of charge. www.chezleon.be

AUX ARMES DE BRUXELLES: A household name in the historic quarter of 'l'Ilot Sacre'. The tasteful decor, long established tradition of Belgian cuisine and a service of high quality have since 1921, helped make the 'Armes' one of the more exclusive restaurant of Brussels. www.armebrux.be

Of course Brussels has lots more to offer. One thing is sure you will never go hungry.

Best fries: Chez Antoine - Place Jourdan, 1040 Etterbeek
